Singapore has a reputation as a food haven, offering a diverse array of cuisines at various price points.
However, for one tourist couple, the experience fell far short of expectations.
In a post shared last month on Xiaohongshu, they criticised the food in Singapore as both expensive and unappetising.
According to their profile, the page is run by a husband-and-wife duo from China.
Listing several popular eateries and dishes, they expressed frustration over the quality of the food.
“I almost wanted to doubt myself! Why is it so easy to step on landmines?” they lamented.
They went on to explain that while they found Bengawan Solo’s pandan cheese rolls to be “not nice”, they felt the food at Song Fa Bak Kut Teh was “ordinary”.

The tourists also called out Eminent Frog Porridge in Geylang for being undeserving of its Michelin Bib Gourmand, and stated that the food at Lau Pa Sat was so bad it made them angry.

As for 99 Old Trees Durian, they described it to be “as ordinary as it gets”.
In a follow-up comment, the tourists clarified that while they found most of the food “average”, they did not consider it all “bad tasting”.
For instance, they specifically praised the food at Boon Tong Kee as delicious.
The couple also shared their experiences at other food spots in Singapore, such as Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat, Yat Ka Yat Desert, and Nutmeg & Clove, a cocktail bar located in Bugis.

While they had positive things to say about the steamboat and dessert places, they again described the cocktail bar as “ordinary” and found the prices “ridiculous”.

They also posted a picture of goreng pisang from an undisclosed stall, praising it as delicious despite its unassuming appearance.
In one of their videos, it seems the food places were recommended by their Malaysian friends, who often visit Singapore.
