‘Am I getting scammed?’: Tourist from China mistakes RM as RMB while trying to buy food in M’sia

Tourist mistakes RM as RMB while trying to buy food in Malaysia

A Chinese tourist in Malaysia got confused after seeing prices listed in RM as she thought that it meant RMB, the official currency of the People’s Republic of China.

She shared her conundrum online where it was quickly reshared by social media pages, with many commenters stepping in to clear up her confusion.

Confusion over currencies

A screenshot of the social media post was shared by media outlet ILifePost on Facebook on 10 May, although it appears to have been circulated on other online platforms as far back as last August.

“Am I getting scammed?” the caption in the post stated.

In the image shared, prices at the food stall, which appeared to sell pastas, are listed in RM, also known as Malaysian Ringgit.

However, the tourist seemed to think that RM meant RMB, or Renminbi — the Chinese yuan. Currently, RM1 trades for ¥1.73.

The OP then asked: “Isn’t the unit for Ringgit MYR?”.

It is unclear when the photo was taken, though the location tag shows Kuala Lumpur.

Netizens offer explanation

Commenters quickly rushed to explain. While MYR is the currency code for the Ringgit that is used internationally, it is much more common to see the Ringgit abbreviated as RM within Malaysia itself.

Some commenters were less than generous, however, with many calling the tourist stupid.

Comment 1: There is no cure for stupidity.
Comment 2: This is her first time leaving the province, forgive her ignorance.

One comment even referenced an incident from last month concerning another tourist from China, where the woman demanded AirAsia air stewards to speak Mandarin.

Another tried to give the tourist advice, saying that it was wise to study up about the place you are going to visit before making the trip.
