UK backpackers in S’pore witness alleged shady exchange in Little India

Couple stumbles upon “shifty” exchange along Kerbau Road

UK backpacking husband-and-wife duo, Ryan and Katie, who co-run the page @rkbackpacking, were recently in Singapore.

During their visit, they came across a strange scene while walking along Kerbau Road in Little India.

Their Instagram post on 10 Oct documents the quick but peculiar interaction between three individuals.

The man then passes the cash over to an accomplice as the woman keeps walking down the road.

She eventually stops in front of a public bin, which a man then opens.

He retrieves some unidentified goods in a red plastic bag from inside the bin and gives this to the lady in red.

Discussing the scene, the couple speculates that it was “surely not a drug deal”.

Ryan would go back to try to see what was in the bin, but only received “extremely dirty looks”.

Speaking to MS News, the couple said that these looks came from various passers-by who were near the bin where the exchange happened.

They maintain that anything they discuss in their Reel is only assumption and that they are unable to confirm any facts.

Netizens chime in

Responding to the couple’s appeal for an explanation, several netizens offered possible insight into the situation.

One commenter shared that the couple had likely seen a typical process involving the sale of illicit substances.

They theorised that the goods sold to the lady may have been “smuggled or counterfeit cigarettes, vapes, [or] pod[s]”.

Another commenter brought up the similarities of the scenario to the cases of unlicensed drug sellers found in Geylang.

Most netizens commenting on the reel agreed that the actions of the three people were indeed suspicious and likely illegal.

Many of them were in favour of reporting the incident to authorities.

However, there was also a smaller subset of netizens who felt that filming the trio was an invasion of privacy.
