Most Workplaces To Close By 7 Apr, But Supermarkets, Hospitals, & Banking Remain Open

Singapore Workplaces To Close From 7 Apr For A Month

Due to drastic increase of local Covid-19 cases in Singapore over the past week, the government will be tightening measures to keep the outbreak under control.

On Friday (3 Apr) PM Lee announced in a live telecast that most workplaces will be closed for a month from next Tuesday (7 Apr).

Those providing “essentials” services, however, will not be affected.

Singapore workplaces providing non-essential services to close

In his speech, PM Lee announced that all companies, apart from those providing “essential” services and from key economic sectors, will be closed for 1 month.

Those not affected by the closure include:

  • Clinics and hospitals
  • Food establishments
  • Key banking services
  • Markets and supermarkets
  • Social services
  • Energy
  • Water/waste/environmental
  • Transportation/logs/storage
  • Info/comms
  • Security
  • Facilities management/public infrastructure
  • Manufacturing essential to security/sustenance/safety
  • Hardware
  • Pets
  • Vehicle repairs.

Meanwhile, those engaging in construction and shipyard operations, would have to close during this period.

Employees can still work from home, should their nature of work allow for it.

This will hopefully serve as a “circuit breaker” to prevent a large-scale outbreak and bring the number of Covid-19 cases down over time.

The manpower, finance, and trade and industry will work together to provide job support.

Companies who require clarifications should reach out to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

A necessary to curb Covid-19 outbreak

While these tightened measures will likely have huge implications for companies and employees in Singapore, we hope they will bear with it for the time being.

Such steps are drastic yet necessary to curb the spread of the virus.
