A Singapore foodie recently posted on Facebook to rant about a Ya Kun Kaya Toast diner who removed butter from her toast.
The post garnered a controversial reaction, with some netizens accusing him of being ‘kaypoh‘ for bothering about what others do.
Ex-food vlogger Gregory Leow shared the post on Facebook on Saturday (10 Oct).
He told MS News that he spotted the diner a few days ago while queuing at a local Ya Kun outlet.

Mr Leow snapped a photo, which showed the diner removing all the butter slices from her kaya toast before eating.
“I had to do a mental facepalm, seriously,” he wrote before going on a dietary rant in his post.
Mr Leow wrote about butter’s nutritional value and energy content.
He told MS News that it had nutrients which the Ya Kun eggs and kaya cannot replace.

Furthermore, he claimed that dietary cholesterol has “limited impact on blood levels”, and that the health risks of butter are overstated.
“I found it interesting because butter is a legitimate part of the set and has real nutritional value,” Mr Leow told MS News, explaining why he took the photo.

He listed benefits such as fat-soluble vitamins and butyrate for gut health.
A lot of people still treat it as something to discard by default. I posted to highlight the benefits of real butter versus the common habit of removing it, and versus margarine used at many other places.
Mr Leow also stated that margarine was much more unhealthy than butter.
His post gained over 460 comments at the time of writing, with many perplexed at why he’s so upset by the incident.
“Sorry, but you are a real kaypoh. Why do you even bother how others eat their breakfast?” a commenter remarked.

Numerous other netizens echoed the same point about minding his own business, including one who wrote: “Now got butter police?”

Mr Leow responded to many of the comments, defending himself by saying it was just his opinion.

“The person is not identifiable. I’m not outing anyone or telling her what to do — I said clearly it’s her money and her choice,” he explained his stance to MS News.
Mr Leow argued that observing something in public and commenting on it from a nutritional standpoint was not the same as interfering in someone’s private life.
Several users instead suggested that the diner may be on a calorie-controlled diet.

On this, he opined to MS News that calories from a “health food” like butter are different from junk food calories.
Mr Leow acknowledged that this did not mean everyone must eat butter, but that discarding it might not be the healthier move for most people.
The ex-vlogger told MS News that he expected some pushback when he made the post, but was surprised at the actual reaction.
I didn’t expect it to draw this much attention, but I’m glad it started conversations about the actual nutrition.

He is himself currently on a “low-carb/keto/carnivore” diet.
Mr Leow also pointed to his public posts to back up the fact that he is usually not interested in “food-policing”.
