Fire at York Hotel involved contents of kitchen in Chinese restaurant

A hotel guest was sent to hospital on Monday (24 Aug) morning after a fire broke out at York Hotel, leading to a Chinese restaurant on level 2 temporarily suspending operations.

Footage of the incident posted on XiaoHongShu showed the hotel lobby filled with smoke.

York Hotel guests evacuated due to fire

The clip, uploaded by a hotel guest, also depicted a large number of guests standing on the road outside the hotel in the Orchard area after having been evacuated from the building.

Several fire engines and an ambulance were parked along Mount Elizabeth.

Also at the scene were several police officers, one of whom was heard asking the crowd whether anyone felt unwell.

Fire broke out in unoccupied food preparation area of restaurant

In a Facebook post on the same day, York Hotel said its fire alarm was activated at 4.04am on Monday due to a “small fire”.

It occurred at a food preparation area within the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant on level 2, which is operated by a tenant.

The blaze was confined to the food preparation area, which was unoccupied at the time, and was extinguished at about 4.20am.

The affected area is closed while investigations are ongoing, while operations at the restaurant have been suspended till further notice, the hotel added.

Guest injures ankle while evacuating

During the evacuation, a guest injured their ankle, York Hotel also said.

 

The guest was sent to the hospital and has already been discharged.

The hotel is providing them with the necessary assistance, it added, sincerely apologising to guests for the disruption and inconvenience.

It maintained that there has been no impact on the hotel’s overall operations.

Guest conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital

In response to queries from MS News, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at about 4am on Monday.

It involved the contents of a kitchen located on the second floor of 21 Mount Elizabeth — the address of York Hotel.

SCDF extinguished the blaze using a fire extinguisher, while one person was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
