A 42-year-old man was killed after a 100kg boulder fell from a roadside cliff and crushed the roof of his pickup truck in Lampang, Thailand.
The incident happened at around 5.30pm on Tuesday (8 Sept) along Highway 106, also known as the Thoen–Li Road, near Kilometre 117 in Na Pong Subdistrict, Thoen District.

Police from Thoen Police Station, along with rescue workers and medical teams, were sent to the scene after receiving reports of the accident.
They found a grey Isuzu pickup truck stopped in the middle of the road, with the roof above the driver’s seat severely crushed.

The driver, identified as Sonthaya, 42, died at the scene from his injuries. His girlfriend, Atcharaphan, 40, escaped unharmed from the passenger seat.
Initial investigations found that the couple had been travelling back to their home in Doi Tao District, Chiang Mai, from Si Sa Ket Province.
Heavy rain made the road slippery, causing Sonthaya to lose control while negotiating a mountain bend.

A passer-by stopped to help and assisted him in moving the pickup to the roadside.
However, as Sonthaya accelerated to continue his journey, a section of the cliff above the road collapsed.
A large boulder weighing around 100kg fell directly onto the vehicle’s roof, striking the area above the driver’s seat and killing him instantly.
Police and rescue teams later cleared the road and transported Sonthaya’s body to Thoen Hospital for an autopsy.
Authorities have also informed his family to collect his body for funeral arrangements.
