‘Dear You’ Teochew version ignited debate over Singapore’s history with dialects

Earlier this month, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) announced that the film’s Mandarin-dubbed version would be screened commercially.

The original Teochew version would be limited to its premiere and special occasions instead.

Since then, many have weighed in on an ongoing debate regarding not just the movie, but Singapore’s history with dialects as well.

After 18 screenings sold out in a flash, Golden Village applied for up to 50 more for the Teochew version.

The Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) subsequently indicated that the IMDA would take a “more flexible approach” in considering applications to screen the dialect version.

Baey Yam Keng announces ‘Dear You’ screening in Teochew, prioritising elderly residents

Last Saturday (27 June), Tampines MP Baey Yam Keng announced a 3 July movie screening of the film, which he called a “special Teochew Appreciation Movie Showcase”.

The 4pm screening will be located at Tampines Mall’s Golden Village, and it will screen the film in Teochew with English and Chinese subtitles.

Mr Baey highlighted specific eligibility criteria meant to focus on the elderly, where applicants:

  • Must register with Tampines Boulevard Cares, a programme that provides financial support and daily essentials to needy households
  • Must be a valid Blue CHAS cardholder

Priority will also be given to seniors aged 60 and above.

Each successful registration entitles you to two tickets, so eligible seniors can watch the film with a spouse, family member, or caregiver.

Tampines Boulevard thus advertised the screening as “A Movie Date with Ah Gong & Ah Ma!”

Interested participants can sign up via an online form, which acts as an application to ballot for tickets. A confirmation email will be sent to successful registrants.
