Boy tries washing HDB staircase in Punggol with guidance from Town Council staff

Boy learns to wash HDB staircase from Town Council cleaner

A boy in Punggol was seen trying his hand at washing an HDB staircase alongside a Town Council cleaner.

A friend of the boy shared a video of the wholesome interaction on TikTok.

The clip showed the teen operating a high-pressure water jet at the building’s stairwell under the worker’s watchful eye.

The worker is also seen correcting the boy on the proper way to hold the washer in the video, while laughing along with him.

He even helps to hold the boy to keep him stable as the boy tries to clean the staircase.

Stepping out of their comfort zone to help out

Speaking to MS News, the original poster (OP), who wishes to stay anonymous, shared details behind the spontaneous encounter.

The incident happened at around 4:13pm on 30 Oct at Block 619C in Punggol.

The OP explained that he and his friend first apologised to the worker for interrupting his duties.

They then asked if they could assist with washing the staircase.

“We just wanted to try something different and experience what it was like to help out,” the OP said.

Rather than turning them away, the worker welcomed the teenagers warmly and guided one of them in using the equipment.

The OP watched by the side, finding it fascinating to see firsthand how estate cleaners carry out their daily work.

Taking the initiative to break down social barriers

The OP noted that Town Council staff are often very approachable once residents take the first step to interact.

“I think the staff are actually quite friendly when you take the initiative to talk to them,” the OP said.

“Sometimes people might not approach them, but once you do, you realise they’re quite nice and welcoming.”

He encouraged others to step out of their comfort zones and bridge the gap with workers in their neighbourhoods.

“You never know how someone will react until you actually approach them,” he reflected.

“Sometimes, a simple conversation can turn into a nice experience, and you might even learn something new along the way.”

Netizens amused by wholesome interaction

Commenters on the video found the interaction amusing and pointed out many humorous observations.

One commenter joked that the Town Council worker seemed to “give up” at the boy’s apparent lack of skill with the washer.

Another user asked about the length of the “intern role” and whether it could “convert full time”, poking fun at the currently difficult job market.

A third commenter suggested that the boy try out other usual Town Council estate staff tasks such as grass cutting and leaf blowing as well.

One particular commenter claimed that they had also done something similar to the video in the past.

However, in their case, the worker supposedly just sat aside and let them clean the corridor by themselves.
