South Korea forced to reconsider exam rules after multiple cheaters use smart glasses

Following five cheating incidents involving smart glasses, South Korea is set to revise its exam regulations to adapt to the rapidly developing technology.

According to The Korea Herald, five cases of cheating using the new technology were detected between May and June.

Rules and laws struggling to keep up with technology

In all five cases, proctors noticed irregularities with the cheaters’ glasses during the exam.

One proctor noticed a test taker pressing a button on the side of their glasses, which caused a display to appear on the lenses. Another was caught when the proctor noted an electronic sound coming from the glasses.

One test taker even had a camera embedded in their glasses.

The five cases occurred during South Korea’s national technical qualification exams.

Currently, South Korean authorities are considering using broader language so that the rules do not have to be amended every time a new technology proves to be too disruptive.

Three of the five cases — in Gwangju, Mokpo and Daegu — were referred to prosecutors.

Criminal charges filed for cheating using glasses

According to Korea JoongAng, South Korea filed its first criminal charges for cheating using smart glasses back in July.

The suspect said he developed an AI application that could be integrated with the smart glasses and then wanted to know if it would generate correct answers in a real exam. The man had been taking an exam for a fire protection engineer license.

Authorities are training proctors to spot AI-powered smart glasses following the surge in cheating cases.
