20 residents evacuated from Ang Mo Kio fire, cause under investigation

Two residents and one firefighter were sent to the hospital on Tuesday (22 Sept) after a fire broke out at a flat in Ang Mo Kio, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) in a Facebook post on the same day.

Footage of the incident posted on TikTok showed the flat engulfed by large flames.

In the clip, the fire was seen growing larger and larger from the window of the seventh-floor unit.

It caused thick smoke to fill the air.

At least two fire engines were already at the scene, and firefighters worked to set up a hose and connect it to a fire hydrant.

Within minutes, the heat had caused the window grilles to melt and fall away.

Fire put out by SCDF

Soon, the flames disappeared from the flat after being put out by firefighters, to cheers from those watching from below.

A big cloud of white smoke was emitted from the window.

Pieces of charred metal from the grilles then fell to the ground.

Fire involved items in the living room

SCDF said in its post that it was alerted to the fire at about 10.45am on Tuesday.

When firefighters arrived, black smoke was coming out of the living room of a unit on the seventh floor of Block 254 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4.

As a precaution, about 20 residents from the affected block were evacuated by the police and SCDF.

2 residents & firefighter sent to the hospital

During the operation, two people were found in the bedrooms of the flat.

They were led out by firefighters and assessed for smoke inhalation.

They were then conveyed to Singapore General Hospital.

Additionally, a firefighter was assessed for heat exhaustion after the operation.

He was conveyed to Woodlands Hospital as a precaution.

Temporary accommodation to be arranged for affected residents: MP

In a Facebook post of his own, Kebun Baru SMC MP Henry Kwek, who went down to the block, said he hoped that the two hospitalised residents would make a full recovery.

HDB will arrange temporary accommodation for the affected residents, he noted, thanking HDB and the town council for working quickly to support them.

He also expressed appreciation for the police and SCDF officers who were on the ground.

Residents urged to observe fire safety precautions

While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, Mr Kwek urged residents to remind their family members to observe basic fire safety precautions, especially the elderly.

In particular, he advised them to be “mindful” when cooking or using other sources of heat.

SCDF strongly advised residents not to leave their cooking unattended and to keep the area clean and grease-free.

Residents should not overload power sockets or charge devices overnight unattended, nor leave lighted materials such as incense sticks or cigarettes unattended. They should instead be fully extinguished before being thrown away.

The top three causes of fires in homes are unattended cooking, electrical fires and unattended lighted material, it noted.
