Fire involved cooking & kitchen exhaust ducting of food court stall in Woodlands

A fire that broke out at a food court in an industrial estate in Woodlands on Thursday (13 Aug) was put out by members of the public, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

Footage of the incident posted on Facebook showed thick smoke billowing out from the second floor of the building.

Workers spray fire extinguishers at flames

Upon closer look, the flames appeared to be coming from ducting across the ceiling of the food court.

Several workers were attending to the fire, with one seen spraying a fire extinguisher at it from the ground floor.

Two other workers had climbed to the second floor using a tall ladder, carrying extinguishers.

They continued trying to put out the blaze, spraying the contents of the extinguishers till they were emptied.

However, by the end of the 2.5 minute-long video, the fire persisted.

No injuries from fire at Woodlands industrial estate food court

In response to queries from MS News, SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at about 11am on 13 Aug.

It had occurred at 200 Woodlands Industrial Park E7 — the address of Woodlands Recreation Centre, which contains a Sheng Siong supermarket and coffeeshop on the first floor and a food court on the second floor.

The fire involved cooking on a stove and the kitchen exhaust ducting of a stall in the food court, SCDF noted.

Thankfully, members of the public extinguished the blaze using fire extinguishers and hosereels.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

SCDF advises stallholders to clean exhaust ducts

SCDF reminded members of the public, especially stall holders, to take safety precautions to prevent kitchen exhaust duct fires.

Their stoves, the surrounding area and exhaust duct openings should be free from grease and oil stains, SCDF said.

Exhaust ducts should also be cleaned and maintained at least once a year.
