First Hakka chain restaurant in S’pore launching at Jewel, reportedly opened by Putien

Hakka Yu restaurant will be opening on the third floor of Jewel Changi Airport

Singapore’s very first Hakka chain restaurant is set to open in Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport.

Photos sent in by an MS News reader show that the hoardings are already up for a restaurant called Hakka Yu (客语).

The new restaurant, located in unit #03-220/221/222 on the mall’s third floor, is dubbed a “Guangzhou food landmark”.

The hoarding says that its first outlet in Singapore is “opening soon”, without giving a specific date.

One of the dishes that foodies can expect to try there is Hakka salt-baked chicken, which is apparently a “Guangdong intangible cultural heritage”.

MS News understands that it’s being brought over by award-winning Singapore brand Putien as its newest project.

Putien declined to comment when MS News contacted the company.

Hakkas are fourth-largest Chinese dialect group in S’pore

The Hakkas are the fourth-largest Chinese dialect group in Singapore, according to Culturepaedia.

In 2020, Hakkas comprised 8.6% of our Chinese population, or about 259,000 people.

Although relatively small, the Hakka dialect group holds particular significance in Singapore — notably, founding father Lee Kuan Yew was Hakka.

Only one Hakka restaurant known to exist in S’pore

Despite this, the island is lacking in restaurants that serve authentic Hakka cuisine, with only one Hakka restaurant known to be in existence.

That restaurant is Plum Village Hakka Restaurant in Sembawang Hills.

However, even this establishment could be close to shuttering, as its 78-year-old boss told Channel NewsAsia in an interview published in February that it would last for another two or three years at most.

That’s because his nonagenarian mother probably doesn’t have much longer to live and his children do not have any interest in taking over.
