Viral ‘Newspaper-Stuffed Wall’ Video Triggers Netizen Rants On HDB’s Facebook

‘Newspapers In Wall’ Clip Triggers Netizens

A viral video surfaced on Facebook last Thursday showing newspapers stuffed inside a HDB balcony wall.

Triggering concerns among Singaporean netizens, the video garnered around 200,000 views as of 19 Aug (Sun).

The video has since been taken down, but several netizens who downloaded the video took it upon themselves to re-upload the clip.

Have a look at the video below:

HDB’s Response

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) released a Facebook post on the same day to address the shocking footage.

According to HDB’s post, the newspapers were stuffed into the wall during a window installation project in 1999.

The culprit behind the stuffed newspaper was an external contractor who was privately engaged by the flat owner.

Fortunately, HDB found no structural safety concerns for the flats and the walls has since been rectified.

Netizens sharing their own experiences

HDB’s Facebook post attracted a ton of comments from netizens.

Many were keen to share their own personal experiences — some of which were not so relevant to the case at hand.

This netizen had a similar experience 2 years ago. The workers involved even had the cheek to ask the flat owners for spare newspapers.

Another mistook the Facebook post for HDB’s direct feedback portal.

Could newspaper fillings be the reason behind the loud stomping sounds you hear at night? This netizen certainly think so.

This poor netizen added that she has to deal with dirty water flooding into her apartment whenever the rubbish chute’s being washed.

Be more aware next time

While we are glad that the stuffed newspaper didn’t raise any structural concerns in this case, we hope home owners will be more mindful and attentive during their future upgrading projects.

That way, we can ensure such incidents will never happen again in the future.

As for the rest of the unhappy HDB residents facing problems with their flats, consider using HDB’s feedback form here.
