IKEA S’pore offering free coffee & tea for 5 days, invites public to escape haze at its stores

IKEA offers free coffee and tea at all three Singapore stores from 19 to 23 Oct amid haze

With the haze putting a damper on outdoor plans, IKEA Singapore is offering visitors a place to take a break indoors, along with a free drink.

From 19 to 23 Oct, visitors can enjoy complimentary coffee or tea at the IKEA Restaurant at all three stores in Tampines, Jurong, and Alexandra, with no minimum spend required.

Outdoor activities affected by haze islandwide

Last Friday (16 Oct), the National Environment Agency (NEA) reported that the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reached 229 in the Central Region at 3pm, the highest reading recorded during Singapore’s ongoing haze season.

This reading fell within the ‘Very Unhealthy’ range, with healthy individuals advised to avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion.

The haze has also disrupted activities across the island, with a number of schools suspending outdoor activities to reduce exposure. ActiveSG also temporarily closed outdoor and non-air-conditioned facilities before resuming operations on 17 Oct.

As of 12pm on Monday (19 Oct), the 24-hour PSI readings had improved to the ‘Good’ to ‘Moderate’ range in the north, east, and south, although air quality remained ‘Unhealthy’ in the central and western regions.

Members of the public are therefore still advised to monitor the latest air quality readings and adjust their outdoor activities accordingly, as haze conditions can fluctuate throughout the day.

IKEA offers air-conditioned spaces and free Wi-Fi

For those looking to spend some time indoors while the haze persists, IKEA’s stores offer more than just complimentary drinks.

All three stores are air-conditioned and fitted with MERV 14 filters in their heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, which help capture fine particles, including those found in smoke.

These filters help reduce airborne particles, providing visitors with a more comfortable indoor environment during the haze.

In addition, IKEA stores offer free Wi-Fi, so visitors can browse the Internet while enjoying their drinks or simply take a break from the outdoors.

Those who fancy a stroll can also wander through the various showrooms and roomsets to pass the time.

Along the way, they can browse a wide range of living spaces and furniture options, whether to gain inspiration for their own homes or simply appreciate the different layouts.

More family-friendly activities at IKEA from 24 Oct

Families with young children can look forward to activities at IKEA, too.

Throughout October, children aged five to 12 can join the ALPTALL wildlife adventure, which involves hunting for Himalayan animal photo boards around the stores.

The activity is part of IKEA’s new ALPTALL children’s collection, developed in collaboration with Swedish wildlife conservation centre Nordens Ark. The collection aims to help children learn about wildlife conservation and develop a stronger connection with nature.

From 24 Oct, families can also look forward to more activities, including colouring sessions and ALPTALL claw-machine weekends at Tampines and Alexandra.

IKEA Singapore CEO Michael la Cour said the free beverage initiative was a small gesture to make the stores a comfortable space for the community during the haze.

“It’s a small gesture, but it’s the least we can do with our neighbourhood stores. We want it to be a comfortable place for our communities in Tampines, Jurong and Alexandra. Come in, enjoy the free Wi-Fi, wander through our roomsets or just slow down for a while,” he said. “Make yourself at home. We’ll put the kettle on.”
