In a tragic incident, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) pronounced a man dead while extinguishing a fire in a burning living room last Sunday (16 Aug).
At 3.55am, the SCDF received an alert about a fire at Block 339 Jurong East Avenue 1.
Firefighters arriving at the scene noticed black smoke spewing from the living room of a third-floor unit.

SCDF personnel forcibly entered the affected HDB flat and found that the fire involved items in the living room. They extinguished the blaze with a water jet.
During the firefighting operation, firefighters found an unresponsive person in the living room. The person was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic.
Lianhe Zaobao reported that the deceased was an elderly man in his 60s or 70s.
Additionally, the police and SCDF evacuated 50 residents from the affected Jurong East HDB block as a precaution.
This incident is the fourth fatal fire since 28 July, when a 70-year-old man died after being conveyed to the hospital from a MacPherson flat.
On 1 Aug, a Clementi fire resulted in the death of a resident and two firefighters being hospitalised.

Days later, on 3 Aug, an 88-year-old man was found unconscious being trapped by a fire in a Farrer Park HDB flat. He died two days later in the hospital.
