One diner at MyTown shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur (KL) was shocked when she spotted multiple baby cockroaches on a plate of raw meat at her table.
She shared a photo and video of the roaches on Threads on 26 Aug where it quickly grabbed the attention of netizens.
The footage showed at least six bugs huddled in one corner of the plate of raw meat.
The post garnered nearly 30,000 shares and 1,500 comments, with some netizens pointing out that the restaurant in question was Dongnae BBQ.

As a result, Malaysian authorities quickly stepped in and an inspection was conducted.
On Threads, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) shared the results of their inspection which only warranted even more concern.
Inspectors had found more cockroaches inside the premises, specifically on the oil container and fridge door.

The popular hotpot buffet was ordered to temporarily close from 26 Aug until 9 Sept.

In a follow-up post, DBKL said the closure is meant for the restaurant to address their hygiene shortcomings.

In a separate reply to the original post, the mall management also shared that they conducted inspections following the complaint.
They sent a team to inspect the premises immediately following the complaint.
They also said follow-up actions are currently being taken to address the issues and the team will monitor the situation closely to ensure that cleanliness and safety are up to standards.
In response to the incident, Dongnae BBQ has also released an apology letter on its social media platforms.
“We are closing our shop immediately until further notice to conduct a deep cleaning and full sanitisation of all kitchen and dining areas with our professional pest control service to inspect and treat the entire premises,” wrote Manager Lim Jung Min.
“To hopefully regain your trust, we will rebuild and we come back stronger.”
