Man in Thailand modifies sidecar motorcycle into raised vehicle to tackle 1-metre-deep floodwaters

Mechanic’s raised sidecar motorcycle goes viral amidst flooding in Thailand

Amid widespread flooding crises across several provinces in Thailand, standard vehicles are struggling to navigate inundated roads.

However, a uniquely modified sidecar motorcycle in Yala gained online attention for its elevated frame built to wade through metre-deep floodwaters.

The owner is 55-year-old Theepakorn Chankaew (name transliterated from Thai), who operates a local sidecar modification workshop with over 30 years of experience in custom assembly.

Spent 3 days to customise vehicle

He explained that heavy rain lasting two to three hours often causes severe flooding around an intersection and the route to a temple in his neighbourhood, leaving residents struggling to travel.

Over three days, Mr Theepakorn and his son modified a motorcycle by removing parts and building a raised steel frame to clear the floodwaters.

The modification cost less than 10,000 baht (about S$380), excluding the cost of the original motorcycle.

Intended for personal use during flooding

Mr Theepakorn said the vehicle was never intended to be sold or used as a commercial product.

The build was intended for personal use during flooding each year, or to help neighbours during emergencies.

His son later uploaded a video of the vehicle online, which unexpectedly attracted more than three million views.
