Starbucks ECP outlet notifies customers of pet ban due to halal-certification, pet owner frustrated

Pet ban notice at East Coast Park Starbucks upsets dog owner

A pet owner in Singapore is upset with Starbucks after reading a notice that said pets will no longer be allowed at its East Coast Park (ECP) outlet.

Ian told MS News that he disagreed with the business decision, considering the already limited options that pet owners have for their outings.

He first brought attention to the news in a Facebook post made on 11 May.

Pet owner unable to accept loss of outdoor space

In a sign located outside the Starbucks outlet, customers are notified that pets will no longer be permitted in both indoor and outdoor seating areas from 25 May.

According to the notice, the change is part of the company’s transition towards halal-certified operations.

However, guide dogs will still be allowed.

Ian called the move “absolutely ridiculous” and was confused by the company’s decision.

“Many pet owners patronise this Starbucks @ Parkland Green because there is an outdoor area where the pets can rest and drink their favourite puppucino cups,” he said to MS News.

Ian pointed out that he has never come across a badly behaved dog at the premises, and that crows and birds at the park also pose a hygiene risk as well.

“Given that you are located in a park, this new rule doesn’t quite make sense for the establishment,” he added.

“There have not been any cases of defecating or any other cleanliness issues.”

Started drinking coffee as the outlet allowed pets

In the comments section of his Facebook post, Ian clarified that he recognised the decision ultimately lies with the company.

“Yes, this is a business decision made by Starbucks Singapore and it’s their every right to do so,” he said.

“Of course, there may be an impact on their sales… there are a lot of dog owners that go to that outlet specifically because of their dogs.”

Ian also shared that the outlet had personal significance to him, as he only started drinking coffee because “it was a nice place” for his dogs to socialise.

However, he stressed that large corporations should consider more than just “bottom line” when making such decisions.

“It’s also about principles, and doing the right thing.”

Mixed reactions, most agree with pet owner

Some netizens expressed disappointment over the change, while others pointed out that halal-certification requirements may have led to stricter rules on pets.

A netizen said that having dogs at a venue does not make it “non-halal”.

Meanwhile, another Facebook user found the notice “contradicting” as the outlet will still allow guide dogs.

However, one commenter could understand why Starbucks did so as “all halal establishments have the right to turn away pet dogs and cats.”

Post was never about race or religion

Ian, who has three adopted dogs, told MS News that his Facebook post was never about race or religion.

Instead, it was about a business decision that further restricts outing options for pet owners in a place where such choices are already limited.

He also shared that he had been visiting the ECP outlet with his dogs for several years.

“The staff at Parkland Green’s Starbucks are incredible,” added Ian.

“They have always shown love and care for the pets that go there.”

Addressing hygiene issues, Ian proposed using disposable ware at the outdoor seating area to eliminate cross-contamination instead of a “blanket ban” on pets.

“Starbucks has always preached inclusivity but this will only further limit spaces for pet owners in a country that already doesn’t have many animal-friendly spaces to begin with,” he said.

Starbucks Singapore reviewing store operations

In response to queries from MS News, Starbucks Singapore said they are committed to creating a warm and welcoming experience for every customer.

“We are currently reviewing certain aspects of our store operations as we explore how best to serve our community, and we will share updates as they become available,” a spokesperson said.

In the meantime, the ECP outlet’s current operations remain unchanged, and pets will continue to be welcomed on the premises.

“We apologise for any confusion caused by our earlier communication and thank our customers for their understanding.”
