Porsche EV worth over S$228K plunges into canal after rolling across road

An imported Porsche electric vehicle (EV) worth more than THB6 million (S$228,000) plunged into a five-metre-deep canal in Samut Prakan Province, Thailand, on 5 Sept.

The incident reportedly occurred after the owner failed to properly secure the vehicle before stepping out.

Car rolled across busy road before falling into canal

CCTV footage showed the white car being parked on a sloped driveway outside an auto parts shop.

Shortly after the female shop owner exited the vehicle, the car began rolling backwards and crossed the multi-lane road.

A nearby pickup truck driver even had to reverse quickly to avoid being hit, CH7 News reported.

Luckily, there were no vehicles passing directly in the car’s path at the time, preventing a more serious collision.

The car then fell into the Suvarnabhumi Canal, opposite the shop.

Following the incident, the car owner contacted officers from the Bang Phli Police Station and local rescue workers for assistance.

Two-hour recovery operation caused traffic delays

Rescue teams used a heavy-duty crane to lift the submerged vehicle out of the canal.

The recovery operation took more than two hours, during which police temporarily closed one lane of the road, according to Daily News.

The closure caused traffic congestion stretching several kilometres before normal traffic resumed.

Owner allegedly did not engage parking brake

The owner’s son believes the incident occurred because his mother did not turn off the engine before exiting the vehicle.

Additionally, she may have thought she had left it in Park (P), but the transmission remained in Neutral (N), so the parking brake was not engaged.

Due to this, the vehicle rolled down the incline and crossed the road in less than a minute.

Fortunately, oncoming drivers spotted the moving vehicle and managed to brake in time, preventing further accidents.

The owner’s son apologised to motorists affected by the traffic disruption and used the incident to remind drivers to double-check their gear settings and parking brakes before leaving their vehicles.

The family said the imported electric vehicle was less than two years old and has insurance coverage.
