Anywheel bicycles allegedly left unattended for two years at Sungei Kadut despite feedback

Several vandalised and abandoned Anywheel bicycles were allegedly left in Sungei Kadut for two years, with some becoming overgrown with grass.

According to an MS News reader who wishes to be anonymous, the bicycles were located in front of their workplace, and were first noticed in March 2024.

The reader said repeated attempts were made to contact Anywheel about the bicycles, including through OneService and other platforms.

However, the bicycles remained uncleared for an extended period of time.

“Some even have long grass grown over them already,” the reader said in an email tip-off to MS News.

They shared that the situation only changed after they reached out to an 8world reporter recently, who followed up with Anywheel about the abandoned bicycles.

According to the reader, the bicycles were finally cleared on the morning of 5 Sept after the reporter’s inquiry.

Approached HelloRide workers for help

The reader also shared that they saw HelloRide workers coming by the area daily to collect their company’s bicycles and thought of asking them for help.

However, when approached, a HelloRide worker reportedly said that they were not supposed to touch other companies’ bicycles.

“We were all extremely frustrated. Why is it that one company can clear their bicycles quickly, while another can’t clear it for many years?” the reader said.

The reader noted that requests to HelloRide to clear improperly parked bicycles were addressed the same day.

Priority given to seriously damaged bicycles and safety concerns

Anywheel Singapore told MS News that personal locks, vandalism, and theft are not intended uses of its shared bicycles.

“Recovering these bikes requires significant operational time and resources that could otherwise focus on improving service availability for riders,” said an Anywheel spokesperson.

Upon receiving a report, the operations team evaluates the situation and takes appropriate action, including removing unauthorised locks or recovering and repairing bicycles.

Response times depend on the location and issue severity, with serious damage or safety concerns receiving priority.

May not be the same bicycle at the same location

“While we cannot verify how long the particular bicycle shown has been at the location, our on-ground teams have observed recurring instances of vandalism and theft involving shared bicycles in this vicinity,” said the spokesperson.

Bicycles removed from the location may have been replaced by others associated with the same individual(s).

Thus, a bicycle’s presence at one location does not necessarily indicate it remained there throughout the reported period.
