An Yishun durian shop employee became the victim of theft when a man stole his mobile phone in broad daylight last Sunday (20 Sept).
The shop offered the thief a chance to return it, but eventually lodged a report with the police.
Local shop ‘Durian Lah’ posted the CCTV footage of the alleged crime onto Facebook.

The footage showed their shop at Block 744 Yishun Street 72, at around 6.13pm on 20 Sept.
A spokesperson for Durian Lah told MS News that the shop’s employee went to the restroom, leaving his mobile phone on a table.
During this time, a man wearing a blue cap and with his right arm in a sling entered the empty stall.
Smoking a cigarette, he noticeably glanced right at the CCTV camera.

When asked if the thief was a passer-by, the spokesperson replied, “Not sure, seems like we saw him before.”
The man positioned himself next to the mobile phone on the table for a few seconds.
He then slowly turned around and looked straight at the camera again.

The man subsequently grabbed the mobile phone off the table and slipped it into his pocket.
He then left the shop, walking away as if nothing had happened.
When the employee returned from the toilet, he noticed that his phone was gone.

In Durian Lah’s Facebook post made at 10.37pm on the day of the theft, the shop provided the thief an opportunity to return the phone. They wrote:
Please return the phone as soon as possible. If it is not returned, we will make a police report and provide the relevant CCTV footage and evidence to the authorities.
The spokesperson told MS News that they believed in giving the thief a chance.

Many netizens urged the chain to just lodge a police report immediately.
One of them pointed out that the thief “obviously already saw your camera”, yet still stole the phone anyway.

The spokesperson told MS News that they ended up filing a police report at around 11pm on 22 Sept.
“The Police confirm that a report was lodged and investigations are ongoing,” the police stated to MS News.
