A software update on Samsung’s refrigerators has reportedly caused some to malfunction. The blunder comes just before Chuseok, the Korean mid-autumn harvest festival.
Many South Koreans affected by the faulty software update said they stocked their fridges with food prior to the holiday and are now scrambling to make sure it does not spoil.
According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the issues first began on Tuesday (22 Sept).
Many of the reports stemmed from users on Samsung Members. The malfunctions seem to mostly affect the RM70F and RM80F Bespoke AI four-door refrigerators, although Samsung said they are currently investigating.
Users online report that their fridges suddenly lost all power after the update. Some also said they had to dispose of all their food after not being able to fix the issue.

At the moment, the issues seem to be isolated to South Korean users.
The outage caused outrage online, with some affected even declaring that users should never update their fridge.
Samsung officials said the faulty update was caused after an internal testing file was mistakenly distributed.
They emphasised that there are no defects in the fridges, nor was it a software outage of their SmartThings platform.
They promised to restore the fridges to working condition as fast as possible.
However, their statement did not indicate whether or not affected users will be compensated for their spoiled food.
Local media reports that hundreds of complaints have been filed over the outage.
