In a speech on Tuesday (9 Jun), Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong reminded Singaporeans that social distancing must continue, lest cases spike again and we need to initiate another ‘Circuit Breaker’.
Unfortunately, it seems that some Singaporeans still need to be convinced, as people from different households have been seen meeting up in parks.
This led Mr Wong to once again remind us to comply with the rules even though the ‘Circuit Breaker’ may officially be over.
In a Facebook post on Friday (12 Jun), Mr Wong said that the authorities have had to step up enforcement actions as people from different households have been gathering in parks.
Most park visitors have complied with safe distancing rules as the parks have stayed open during the ‘Circuit Breaker’, he added.
But as there are still those who aren’t behaving, he urged everyone to comply with the safe distancing rules, i.e. going out alone or with only members of your household.
Mr Wong, who is the co-chair of the Multi-Ministry Task Force handling the Covid-19 outbreak, also advised us against letting our guard down just because the ‘Circuit Breaker’ is over.
That means we still have to stay disciplined and take responsibility for our actions, he added, though he acknowledged that we all miss our friends.
While we’re in the process of reopening the economy and adjusting to a “new normal”, it’s crucial that we remain vigilant and stick to the rules so that the process can be faster.
Covid-19 is still a concern, and we need to be more careful than ever if we want to move into Phase 2, and then Phase 3.
Let’s hold on a little while longer, and meet our friends when we are finally given the green light.
