These days, getting a job might feel like winning the lottery — with job seekers missing out on positions be it due to a lack of experience, or a lack of ‘hunger’.
For one Singaporean woman, her tactic to gain an edge in the competitive job market included otherworldly elements.
In a TikTok video posted on 25 July, 23-year-old nail artist Jo shared how she hides various religious images in her digital resume in order to receive “divine intervention”.
In an exclusive with MS News, Jo shares that her experience with the job market has not been the best.
She says she does not have the highest education qualifications, although she has many years of working experience under her belt.
As a naturally expressive and creative individual, she points out that “having tattoos and colourful appearances” may not sit well in office jobs.
Although she did receive several job opportunities, she turned them down as they did not align with what she wanted.
“I was actually shocked to see the remuneration offered on many of these job listings, as I had expected higher.” Jo says to MS News.
“I think this contributes to the ‘job market being bad’ or ‘lower than expected’ salaries for the amount of work that has to be put in.”
Jo notes that many people pray for successful in various parts of their lives, so she “might as well put a direct source on what [she] was trying to manifest”.
Thus, she decided to sprinkle a little magic in her resume.
In the video, Jo shows herself digitally editing her resume on Canva.
First, she overlays an image of Wenchang Dijun, the Taoist god of culture, literature and academic success, over her resume before changing its opacity from 100% to 0%.

Then, she overlays a picture of Phra Phrom, also known as the Four-Faced Buddha, and reduces the opacity as well.

Finally, she uses an image of a Chinese talisman and repeats the steps.

Speaking to MS News, Jo says that she initally thought of adding more images from other religions, but was worried of offending people.
“I only put in Taoist and Buddhist deities in because these are my main beliefs.” she says. “I made two versions of the resume, one with transparent images and one without.”
That said, Jo says she submitted her resume on platforms without the images. Occasionally, she would use the “blessed” version.
Jo’s job hunting strategy resonated well with netizens, with the video gaining more than 152,000 views and 13,000 likes.
Many netizens applaud Jo for being creative and smart, wishing her all the best in her job search.

Some claim they are going to try out this tactic for themselves.

One netizen asked if the idea worked, to which Jo says she is not sure since the companies have not replied yet.

While it is unknown if the images did bless her resume, the competitive job market has pushed people to not only stack their resume with work experiences, but also seek unique ways to stand out amongst the candidate pool.
Jo says to MS News, ” Personally, I think it’s important to be grateful, but also to not credit everything to divine forces.”
