A hawker in Singapore’s Chinatown has been giving an elderly uncle a free meal of kway chap every week, along with S$5 after each meal.
The heartwarming gesture was recently shared by hawker Melvin Chew in a Facebook post on 16 Oct.
“Every week he will come for free kway chap, after eating give him S$5,” wrote Mr Chew in the caption.
He also shared that the uncle recently wanted to eat pig blood curd, to which the hawker was happy to oblige.

A photo accompanying the post showed the uncle seemingly enjoying his complimentary bowl of kway chap in a hawker centre.
The uncle could be seen dressed simply in a grey t-shirt, khaki bermudas, and slippers.
The post has since resonated with netizens, many of whom praised Mr Chew for his simple but kind gesture.
A netizen supported the hawker’s decision to share the post, noting that it encourages others to “share and care”.

Melvin Chew, 48, told MS News that the uncle has been coming to his stall for more than 10 years.
“We knew him when he was selling newspapers at the Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre,” said the second generation owner of Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck & Kway Chap.

Mr Chew also shared that they would buy newspapers from him in the past if he happened to be selling them.
“Then my mother will give him some extra kopi money,” he said.
Mr Chew also explained that the uncle only eats tau pok, eggs, and salted vegetables with his kway chap and nothing else.
Hence, he decided not to charge him for the meals.
As for the S$5, it was something the family has been doing for the uncle since the Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre days.
When the uncle recently asked for pig blood curd, Mr Chew asked if he used to enjoy it, to which the uncle said “yes”.
“We see him eat happily we also feel blessed,” said Mr Chew.
He also told MS News that the uncle would thank them after having free kway chap and taking the “kopi money”.
However, the hawker’s kindness does not end at free weekly meals and kopi money.
Every Chinese New Year, Mr Chew would buy the uncle some new clothes to wear.
By sharing his Facebook post, Mr Chew hopes to encourage more people to “contribute to the society by helping our needy or low income families”.
