Woman grows ‘trident’ flesh on fingernail that resembled Maserati logo
A 24-year-old woman in Hangzhou, China recently noticed an unusual growth on her fingernail that strangely resembled a “trident”.
After seeking medical advice, doctors determined the growth was likely caused by her frequent manicures and recommended its immediate removal.
Doctor recommends immediate removal of extra flesh
According to Taiwanese news outlet CTWANT, Ms Shanshan (name transliterated from Chinese) is a passionate “nail art enthusiast” who changes her nail designs regularly.
However, the 24-year-old was alarmed when she discovered a small lump on her fingernail. The lump grew larger with time, eventually resembling the Maserati brand logo.

Upon examination, a dermatologist diagnosed the growth as hypertrophic granulation tissue, specifically a periungual fibroma — they are typically found next to the skin that surrounds the nail plate.
The doctor attributed the condition to Ms Shanshan’s frequent manicures and recommended that she remove it as soon as possible.
Advises 2-week gap between manicures
The doctor explained that artificial nails are often applied over natural nails during manicure sessions. While they may seem lightweight, they place significant pressure on the nail.
Along with the chemicals used and the procedures involved, continuous pressure can damage the nail bed.
Over time, cracks may develop in the nail. This, coupled with improper or overly frequent manicures, may cause new tissue to grow through the cracks.
To avoid similar issues, the doctor advised spacing manicure sessions at least two weeks apart to allow nails to recover.
Additionally, he recommended reducing the use of artificial nails, avoiding harsh removal methods, and using personal or disposable tools to minimise infection risks.
