Singaporeans kidnapped in Malaysia both tested positive for methamphetamine
Two Singaporeans, a man and a woman, have been rescued after being kidnapped in Malaysia, with the man allegedly a fugitive from the Singapore authorities.
The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of S$80,000, said the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) in a press conference on Wednesday (12 Aug).

Photos of S’porean restrained & slashed sent to mother
On Monday (10 Aug), the man’s mother reported to the Singapore Police Force (SPF) that her 32-year-old son had been kidnapped, according to The Malay Mail.
The kidnappers had sent her a photo of her son blindfolded, with his arms tied behind his back.

To show that they were serious, they sent another photo of him, showing that he had been slashed on both thighs.

SPF then reached out to the RMP for assistance.
Ransom of S$80K demanded
The kidnappers demanded S$80,000 for the man’s release, but this was bargained down to S$25,000.
The mother subsequently transferred S$5,000 to her son’s bank account.
The remaining amount was set to be dropped off at a supermarket in Iskandar Puteri, Johor on Tuesday (11 Aug).
Police intercept drop-off, arrest 6 suspects
But the police intercepted the drop-off and arrested a 40-year-old male suspect, said Commissioner M. Kumar, Director of RMP’s Criminal Investigation Department.
They then discovered that the man’s 28-year-old girlfriend had also been kidnapped, and managed to rescue the two Singaporeans.
RMP conducted follow-up raids in Skudai and arrested five more suspects, including one woman.
All six arrested suspects are Malaysians aged between 30 and 46. Five of them have criminal records, and four of them tested positive for methamphetamine.

They will be remanded till 21 Aug. “We believe we have arrested the mastermind and dismantled the group,” Commissioner M. Kumar said.
Police seize items including S$25K in cash
During the raids, RMP also seized cash amounting to S$12,000 in Singapore dollars and RM41,400 (S$13,000) in Malaysian ringgit.

Other items seized included:
- A Rolex watch
- A gold chain
- A Perodua Axia vehicle
- A machete
- 10 mobile phones
- House keys

Further investigations are being carried out to discern the motive for the kidnapping.
Singaporeans kidnapped after seeking help from contact in Malaysia
Commissioner M. Kumar also said that the Singaporean man is allegedly a fugitive from the law.
He is wanted by the Singapore authorities after having allegedly skipped bail for a drug offence.
He reportedly entered Malaysia illegally in May and sought help from a contact. His girlfriend entered the country via legal means.
However, the couple were kidnapped instead.
Their cash — which was later seized by the RMP when they were rescued — was also taken from them.

Singaporeans test positive for meth, detained by Malaysia
Both Singaporeans are currently being detained by the Malaysian authorities after they both tested positive for methamphetamine.
The man is being detained for 14 days under Malaysia’s Immigration Act for not possessing valid travel documents.
His girlfriend has been remanded for four days until 15 Aug due to her positive drug test.
2nd rescue of Singaporeans by RMP in a week
Commissioner M. Kumar noted that this was the second time the RMP had rescued a Singaporean kidnapping victim within a week.
The latest rescue came four days after a 72-year-old Singaporean man was rescued in Kedah after heading to Malaysia for a “job offer”.
The successful rescues highlighted the close cooperation between the police forces of both countries, he added.
