Air quality enters ‘unhealthy’ range in central, west, east & south regions on 14 Sept
Singapore’s air quality again entered the “unhealthy” range on Monday (14 Sept), with four out of five regions exceeding a 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading of 100, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA).
The highest PSI for the day so was 141, registered in the central region at 11pm.

Central region enters “unhealthy” range at 12 noon
Singapore’s central region has seen the worst air quality for more than a week, with its previous peak of 123 PSI recorded on the night of 4 Sept.
On Monday, the PSI in the central region entered the “unhealthy” range for the first time at 12 noon.

The west and east regions joined in at 4pm, entering the “unhealthy” range with a reading of 102.
At 10pm, the south region eventually followed suit with a reading of 104.

The “unhealthy” range is a PSI of 101 to 200, while PSI readings of 51 to 100 are considered “moderate”. If the PSI goes above 200, it will enter the “very unhealthy” range.
Central region hits highest PSI reading since Oct 2023
Since entering the “unhealthy” range, the PSI in all four regions climbed steadily, culminating in the central region’s PSI reading of 141 at 11pm.

This is the highest PSI reading yet since Singapore’s air quality previously hit unhealthy levels in October 2023.
As of 11pm, only the north region had a “moderate” PSI reading — though at 97, it was on the verge of “unhealthy”.
Smoke still detected from Indonesia fires
In its daily haze advisory, NEA said on Monday afternoon that “moderate to dense” smoke plumes continued to be detected from fires in Kalimantan.
This was due to a shift in the prevailing winds to blow from east-southeast.
Smoke haze was also observed to be drifting towards Singapore from southern Sumatra.

Air quality forecast to be in ‘mid-unhealthy’ range
Dry conditions should persist over Singapore and the surrounding region in the coming days, NEA added.
Thus, haze will likely continue to affect Singapore, especially with the winds forecast to blowing from the southeast to the east-southeast.
It also predicted that the PSI would be in the “high moderate” to “mid-unhealthy” range.
NEA advised healthy persons to reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion when the PSI is in the “unhealthy” range.
Vulnerable people and those with chronic lung or heart disease should minimise and avoid such exertion.
