‘Duck or sex worker?’: Netizens amused by sexual innuendo from coffee shop stall in Singapore
Translation can be tricky, especially when nuances get lost between languages.
One netizen recently came across a coffee shop stall with a surprising name that was rather different from its English counterpart.
While the name advertised the stall’s main speciality, its Chinese name carried a much more sexual connotation than the netizen had expected.
Stall name catches OP off guard
In a Reddit post on r/singapore on (15 Sept), the Original Poster (OP) shared a photo of a large sign from a coffee shop stall on Gangsa Road.
The sign displays the stall’s English name, “Boneless Braised Duck”.

Its Chinese name, “我做鸭”, directly translates to “I make duck”.
However, the OP pointed out that the phrase can also carry a sexual connotation, referring to a male sex worker.
While the OP shared that they were not a fan of the food, they added that they were also “not really a fan of these sort of shop names with innuendos too”.
The OP then joked: “So maybe it is a front for something more.”
Netizens gave alternate coffee shop stall names
Netizens could not help but laugh at the absurdity of the stall’s name.
Most netizens joked about the sexual innuendo, offering potential names for other coffee shop stalls.
Translation: Next door opens up a new stall. “Eat my prawn noodles”
Translation: So the next stall will be renamed “I make [chicken]”
Translation: “I make duck” becomes “I ask the Heavens”.
Some commented that stalls with “punny” names tend to have “terrible food”.
