Son allegedly stole several items from 6 stores in Changi Airport, mother allegedly stole perfume
A mother and son duo from Uzbekistan have been charged in court after allegedly stealing items worth S$5,000 from various shops in Changi Airport.
The alleged offences were committed on 28 Aug in the transit area of Terminal 2, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a news release on Tuesday (15 Sept).

Changi Airport shop alerted police after missing sunglasses
On that day, the affected retail outlet alerted the police at about 6.45pm to a case of suspected shop theft.
A shop assistant had found three pairs of sunglasses, worth S$1,462.38, missing from a shelf in the outlet, according to preliminary investigations.
CCTV footage showed a male teenager taking the sunglasses at about 6.28pm.
He then allegedly left the shop without paying for them.

Mother & son located before departing S’pore
Officers from the Airport Police Division managed to locate the 16-year-old boy, who was with his 39-year-old mother, with the help of CCTV footage.
They were apprehended before they departed from Singapore.
The three pairs of sunglasses were recovered, together with other items that were suspected to be stolen.

Mother & son allegedly stole several items from Changi Airport
Upon further investigation, the police found that the teenager had allegedly stolen several items from six shops within the transit area.
The items had a total value of S$4,887.03.
Separately, his mother had allegedly stolen a box of perfume worth S$149.90 from a shop.

She also allegedly received one of the pairs of sunglasses from her son.
Mother & son charged on the same day
On Wednesday (16 Sept), the mother and son were charged for their alleged involvement in separate cases of shop theft.
The teenager was charged with six counts of theft in dwelling under Section 380 of the Penal Code 1871.
His mother was charged with one count of theft in dwelling, and one count of receiving stolen property under Section 411 of the Penal Code 1871.
For theft in dwelling, they face a jail term of up to seven years and/or a fine.
For receiving stolen property, she faces up to five years in prison and/or a fine.

SPF takes ‘serious view’ of shop theft
SPF said it takes a “serious view” of shop theft cases; thus, offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law, it noted, adding:
Offenders should not assume that they can evade detection after committing such offences.
The police also pledged to continue working closely with stakeholders to prevent and deter cases of shop theft at Changi Airport.
