Poly student called ambulance & stayed with stricken bus captain, says Tower Transit
Tower Transit has shown its appreciation to a Ngee Ann Polytechnic student who helped a bus captain after he suffered a medical emergency at the wheel.
Ms Neo Ying Ying, who is studying accountancy, “responded instinctively” after the bus captain became unresponsive, said the transport operator in a Facebook post on Friday (18 Sept).

Tower Transit bus captain suffers medical emergency in Hougang
Tower Transit had previously said that its bus captain experienced a sudden medical emergency while driving Service 854 on Monday (14 Sept).
At the same time, the bus was approaching a bus stop along Hougang Ave 3.
When a man at the bus stop saw the bus captain slumped in the cabin, he knocked on the bus doors to alert the passengers.
Poly student ran over to help when alerted
Ms Neo, who was on her way home on board the bus, ran over to help when she was alerted.
She found the bus captain unresponsive and slumped over the door of the driver’s cabin.
She sought help from another passenger to pull the handbrake so that the bus could come to a stop safely, while she called the ambulance.

Her effort did not end there — as she was concerned for the bus captain, she stayed with him until the ambulance arrived, Tower Transit said.
Poly student presented gift basket & thank-you letter
On Friday, Tower Transit presented Ms Neo with a token of appreciation and a thank-you letter from its Managing Director Winston Toh.
According to the photo, she was given a gift basket full of chocolates and a teddy bear.
The transport operator again expressed gratitude to her, saying:
Thanks to Ying Ying and a few others, our bus captain got timely medical attention and our passengers stayed safe.

SBS ‘proud’ of bus captain who also helped
Notably, an SBS Transit bus captain who was nearby also helped by getting in touch with the Tower Transit control centre.
SBS spokesperson Grace Wu told MS News that it is “proud” of him for “stepping up to help a fellow bus captain when it mattered”.
Identifying him as Mr Toh Tiong Huat, Mrs Wu said his actions reflect the “strong camaraderie” across Singapore’s public transport network, adding:
While we may wear different uniforms, we are all part of the same One Transport family, united by our commitment to serve commuters and look out for one another.
SBS will be recognising him for his actions, she added.
