Lawrence Wong revisits Marine Parade where he grew up, heartened by familiar shops

Lawrence Wong revisited the neighbourhood where he grew up when he went to Marine Terrace Market and Hawker Centre yesterday morning (3 Oct).

The Prime Minister (PM) said the place always feels like home despite all the changes over the years.

Lawrence Wong happy to see familiar stalls and shops in Marine Terrace

PM Wong joined Marine Parade Member of Parliament (MP) Goh Pei Ming on a visit to Marine Terrace Market and Food Centre.

The two men spoke to the diners, residents, and shopkeepers at the market and food centre.

While PM Wong is currently an MP for Marsiling–Yew Tee GRC, he holds a special connection to the Marine Parade area.

“I grew up in this neighbourhood, so it was heartening to see many familiar stalls and shops,” he wrote on the Facebook post.

He felt that it brought back many fond memories.

Grew up in brand-new Marine Parade HDB block after land reclamation

PM Wong previously stated that his parents were proud to own a brand-new HDB flat in Marine Parade, newly reclaimed from the sea.

“It cost them what was then a princely sum of S$30,000.”

He attended Haig Boys’ Primary School, which used to be located nearby at 25 Jalan Tembusu.

In a 2024 video, he recalled that the residents who moved from kampongs into Marine Parade rekindled the “kampung spirit” in their new homes.

“This story of Marine Parade is really the story of all of Singapore,” he said.

However, he felt that the warmth and sense of community had persisted.

“No matter how much the neighbourhood evolves, it will always feel like home,” he concluded.
