SPF to charge 17 motorists for drink-driving

On Wednesday (21 Oct), the Singapore Police Force (SPF) revealed in a news release that it will charge 17 motorists with drink-driving offences on Thursday (22 Oct).

The motorists, aged between 24 and 59, failed breathalyser tests during police enforcement checks between Sept and Oct 2026.

In two of the cases, the motorists’ breath alcohol readings were “more than twice the prescribed legal limit.”

For the second case, a 30-year-old man had consumed two bottles of beer.

He was stopped for checks while driving a friend home and also failed the breathalyser test.

Offenders may be disqualified from driving all types of vehicles

Driving under the influence of alcohol under Section 67(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a fine of between S$2,000 and S$10,000, a jail term of up to 12 months, or both.

For a second or subsequent conviction, offenders face a fine of between S$5,000 and S$20,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to two years.

The court may also disqualify offenders from driving all classes of vehicles.

Authorities urge motorists not to drive while intoxicated

The SPF urges motorists not to drive if they intend to consume alcohol.

Instead, they should take a taxi or private-hire vehicle, use public transport, engage a valet, or ask a non-drinking driver to send them home.

Additionally, the authorities stressed that all motorists must follow traffic laws to keep all road-users safe.
