As the Covid-19 situation on both sides of the Causeway show signs of improving, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced on Monday (8 Jun) that Malaysians may soon return to Singapore as discussion are now underway, reports The Star.
Malaysian workers can enter Singapore
According to Datuk Ismail Sabri, officials from both countries are holding discussions to outline the terms of the process that would allow Malaysians to return to work in Singapore.
While the exact details have not been confirmed, Datuk Ismail mentioned that Malaysia is “prepared to agree” for its citizens to undergo Covid-19 screening before travelling to Singapore.
He also thanked Yayasan Sultan Ibrahim – a government foundation in Malaysia – Temasek Group, and Thompson Medical Group for offering to provide test kits and laboratories.
Malaysians working in Singapore should also download the MySejahtera App — a health monitoring app developed by Malaysia.
Reviving the once busy causeway
The impending ‘reopening’ will certainly come as great news for Malaysians holding jobs in Singapore.
That said, we hope safeguards will be put in place to protect the safety of citizens on both sides of the Causeway.
As we restore certain elements of our pre-Covid lives, perhaps our weekend Johor trips might be possible in the near future too — only time will tell.
