Fire in Punggol block involved contents of a kitchen in a 14th-floor unit

A fire that broke out at a block in Punggol has resulted in two people being assessed by paramedics.

The fire was seen in a TikTok video posted on Friday (18 Oct) that showed black smoke coming out from a unit on a high floor of an HDB block.

It was identified in the caption as Block 126D Edgedale Plains in Punggol.

The clip also depicted more than one Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) fire engine in the carpark below the block.

Firefighters were seen preparing to attend to the blaze.

Many residents were also milling about, having ostensibly self-evacuated from the block.

SCDF alerted to fire in 14th-floor unit of Punggol block

In response to queries from MS News, the SCDF said was it alerted to a fire at about 5.10pm on Friday (18 Oct).

It occurred at Block 126D Edgedale Plains and involved the contents of a kitchen in a 14th-floor unit.

The blaze was put out with a water jet.

Burnt kitchen appliances placed in lift landing

A second video posted by the same user on Saturday (19 Oct), in response to a question from a netizen, showed the blackened interior of a flat on the 14th floor.

Panning to the lift landing, it revealed three burnt kitchen appliances had been left there: a washing machine, stove and refrigerator.

The fridge in particular was badly charred, with its door seemingly having melted off.

2 people assessed by paramedic

SCDF said the fire was likely caused by unattended cooking, according to preliminary investigations.

It added that two individuals were assessed by a paramedic.

However, both of them declined to be sent to hospital.

About 100 people self-evacuated, says resident

A 42-year-old resident of the 14th floor surnamed Wang (transliterated from Mandarin) told Lianhe Zaobao that her 12-year-old son was at home by himself when the fire broke out.

Thankfully, the fire didn’t spread, the bank clerk said.

Another resident, 36-year-old Wang Wen (transliterated from Mandarin), said he passed by the burning block at about 5.45pm when he was picking up his daughter.

He saw that about 100 people had self-evacuated due to the blaze, which blackened the outer walls of the block.
