Metal rod fell from JRL MRT track onto Jurong traffic junction due to ‘material fatigue’: LTA
A truck turning at a traffic junction in Jurong had a close shave when a metal rod fell from the sky and landed on the road next to it.
It came from an elevated MRT track that’s under construction.
Metal rod falls from Jurong Region Line MRT track on 3 Oct
The incident was caught on video footage posted on 3 Oct by SG Road Vigilante on Facebook.
It was reportedly taken that day at 9.28am at the junction of Jurong West Avenue 2 and Jalan Bahar.
Several vehicles could be seen turning right at the junction as a long metal rod fell from an unfinished MRT track for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) above.
One end of the metal rod landed inches to the left of a truck, which drove past it without stopping. It then fell flat on the road next to a white van that stopped.
The van gingerly continued on its journey, followed by other vehicles that also avoided the metal rod lying on the road.
Incident caused by ‘material fatigue’ of metal rod in Jurong MRT line track
In response to queries from Shin Min Daily News, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said components of an elevated track section of the JRL fell from the bridge section onto the road below.
No construction work was being carried out at the time of the incident and no injures or property damage were reported.
After the incident, the work at the site was stopped as the circumstances of the incident were examined.
Preliminary investigations showed that its cause was “material fatigue” and fracture of the metal rod.
According to ScienceDirect, material fatigue refers to the process in which small cracks in a component initiate and grow under the influence of a repeated (normally mechanical) loading.
Safety of elevated track confirmed
Engineers have inspected the elevated track and confirmed its safety, LTA said.
Additional safety measures have also been taken at the construction site.
During the safety time-out, LTA once again reminded workers of the safety procedures and reporting system, it added, stating:
(We) are also working with the general contractor to conduct comprehensive inspections of other JRL construction sites to prevent similar accidents from happening again.
