Man returns stolen underwear with S$35 cash as apology

On Monday (11 Nov), a 42-year-old laundromat owner, who only wants to be known as Ms Kai, filed a police report after a man stole a customer’s underwear from her self-service laundromat in Chonburi province, Thailand.

She recounted that earlier that evening, a well-dressed man — who had parked his SUV in front of the shop — started rummaging through the laundry baskets after entering the premises.

CCTV footage showed the man fishing out underwear from a basket, and stuffing it into his pants pocket.

When confronted by the owner’s daughter, the man claimed he was picking up the laundry.

While she was trying to call the owner of the clothes to verify his claim, the man quickly left the premises.

However, later that night, the man reportedly came back to the laundromat to return the underwear.

He also left a white envelope containing an apology letter and 1,000 baht (S$35) in cash.

The man expressed his regret in the letter, saying that his actions had left him feeling “very stressed and terrible”.

“It caused trouble for others, and I’d like to apologise to the shop owner and the owner of the clothes,” wrote the man.

“I will compensate for the damage as a punishment for myself so that I can learn a lesson. I hope the shop and the owner [of the clothes] will forgive me and not pursue legal action.”

He also promised to “never do this again”.

Despite his apology and remorse, Ms Kai still felt frightened and lodged a police report, hoping that others would remain vigilant and take the incident as a warning.
