Dog plays ‘catch’ with police officers on expressway in Taiwan

A traffic accident in Taiwan on Saturday (23 Nov) took an amusing turn when a dog ran loose on the expressway, playing a game of “catch” with responding police officers and causing a traffic jam.

The black Shiba Inu had escaped its leash following the accident and dashed onto the expressway, creating chaos on one of the region’s busiest highways.

A video of the police officers struggling to catch the energetic pup quickly went viral on Threads, garnering nearly 30,000 likes and 23,000 shares.

More tenacious than fugitives

The video begins with a police officer chasing the dog along the expressway, only for the nimble canine to evade capture each time.

Its tail wags excitedly as it runs away from the officer, clearly enjoying the game of chase.

Road workers then brought out a large net to safely catch the dog, but the clever Shiba Inu continued to elude their attempts, darting through the gaps in the net.

As the furry troublemaker played with the authorities, traffic on all three lanes was halted, with drivers left stuck behind the commotion.

The accident, which occurred around 10.40am, happened when a car in the overtaking lane collided with the guardrail, veered off course, and struck another vehicle in the adjacent lane that was carrying the dog.

The Shiba Inu broke free from its leash, likely due to the shock of the collision.

Both drivers tested negative for alcohol, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

It took over 10 minutes of patient coaxing before the dog was finally guided back into its owner’s car, with the help of the owner’s son.

Traffic was cleared by 11.18am.

The traffic police used the incident to remind drivers that pets in vehicles on expressways should always be securely leashed to prevent accidents and disruptions.
