Elderly in Yishun hoards 100 pots and crates in HDB public space
An elderly man in Yishun has drawn attention for his hoarding practices, which involve more than 100 flower pots and numerous crates stored in a public space on the ground floor of an HDB block.
While such cases often spark complaints, 73-year-old Mr Yang has built good relationships with his neighbours, often sharing the fruits he grows in the flower pots.
Hoards 100 pots and crates in public area in Yishun
The issue first came to light after a resident lodged a complaint with Shin Min Daily News, citing concerns over cleanliness and hygiene.
Photos revealed dozens of crates lining the HDB corridor and numerous flower pots on a grassy patch next to it.
Mr Yang, a resident of the block, acknowledged that the items were his, but maintained that he had adhered to Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) guidelines.
SCDF requires residents leave a minimum clear escape passage of 1.2m to ensure smooth evacuation in cases of fire.
Addressing concerns about mosquito breeding, he explained that he covers water tanks with lids and keeps fish in the tanks to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.
Neighbours in Yishun say items not an issue
Despite the hoard taking up public space, Mr Yang said this was the first time anyone had complained.
He has been maintaining the plants for four to five years and often shares the fruits, such as wax apples, with neighbours.
“Had anyone reflected the issue to me, I would definitely have cooperated,” he said.
Several neighbours corroborated his claims, saying they did not mind the clutter.
A level-one resident described Mr Yang as a good friend, noting that the items didn’t block the passageway.
Another neighbour on the second floor, who seldom stays at the flat, said she knew Mr Yang personally and was unbothered by the situation.
Town council clears area
In response to queries from MS News, the Nee Soon Town Council confirmed it has spoken with Mr Yang to address the paraphernalia.
“Thanks to the cooperation of the residents, the area has been cleared,” it added.
It would also like to remind residents to keep common areas clear to prevent obstructions and potential mosquito breeding grounds.
