Singapore woman gives birth in Grab car en route to hospital

A woman in Singapore ended up giving birth in a Grab car while she was on the way to the hospital after experiencing labour pain.

The newborn was not breathing initially as the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck.

Fortunately, both mother and child were safely transported to the hospital.

Woman gives birth in Grab car

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Mr Syazwan said his wife began experiencing contractions while she was asleep at home.

After monitoring her condition, the couple decided to head to the hospital.

Mr Syazwan revealed that he booked a private-hire car through the Grab app, and the vehicle arrived 20 minutes later.

They had planned to drop off their elder daughter at her grandparents’ house before heading to the hospital.

However, his wife suddenly felt unwell and sensed that she was about to deliver.

Hence, they changed their destination to the hospital instead.

Baby was not breathing at first

Mr Syazwan said that his wife, who is a nurse, had anticipated the possibility that the baby might be born in the Grab car.

Fortunately, it was the couple’s second child. They admitted they would have been completely unprepared if it were their first.

According to Mr Syazwan, the baby was delivered on the back seat of the car after the wife “pushed twice”. The Grab car was on the Central Expressway (CTE) heading toward KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) at the time.

He recalled that the most terrifying moment came right after the delivery, when the newborn was not crying or moving.

His wife soon noticed that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck and quickly freed it. The couple then took turns performing chest compressions.

To their relief, the baby let out a faint cry moments later.

The newborn was assessed to be in good condition after they arrived safely at KKH.

Couple thankful to Grab driver

Mr Syazwan initially feared the driver might complain about his car getting soiled, especially since he had urged him to hurry after learning his wife was about to give birth.

“Fortunately, the driver did not cancel the trip. He remained calm throughout and even reminded my wife to keep breathing.”

Mr Syazwan also assured the driver that he would cover the cleaning fee and shared his intention to contact Grab to commend the driver.

In response to MS News queries, a Grab spokesperson extended their congratulations to Mr Syazwan and Mdm Rizqin on the birth of their child.

“We are delighted to hear that both mother and child are doing well,” added the Grab representative.

Grab has also contacted the driver to commend him for his “calm and professional conduct” during the ride, and for ensuring the family arrives at the hospital safely and promptly.
