16-year-old boy drowns while saving friend swept away by current in river

A 16-year-old teenager drowned after trying to rescue a friend who was caught in the strong current while swimming in Sungai Sedim in Kampung Baru Jemerli, Malaysia, on Monday (12 Jan).

Muhammad Haziq Danish Mohd Hafizul Khairi, from Kuala Ketil, was swimming with five friends when one of them began to struggle against the current, reports The New Straits Times (NST).

According to Kulim police chief, Superintendent Zulkifli Azizan, the incident occurred around 4.40pm, when Haziq attempted to save his friend, who then managed to cling to a nearby tree branch.

Despite his efforts, Haziq was swept away by the current and disappeared downstream.

His friends immediately sought help from nearby villagers, who later found his body lodged against a tree stump about 50 metres downstream from the swimming area, according to Bernama.

Pronounced dead after CPR attempt failed

Firefighters and police arrived at the scene by 5pm and performed CPR in an attempt to revive him.

Tragically, despite their best efforts, medical personnel pronounced him dead at 5.20pm.

The body was later transported to Kulim Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Authorities have ruled out foul play, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
