18-year-old man drowns in river after saving his wife

A heroic attempt to save a loved one ended in tragedy when an 18-year-old man drowned while rescuing his wife.

His 15-year-old sister-in-law also lost her life in the same incident, at a river near a resort in Mandalipau, Papar, on Tuesday (31 March) morning.

Victims among 5 people swept away by currents

The incident occurred around 10am when the man jumped into the river to save his wife, who was being swept away by the strong current.

After successfully rescuing her, he is believed to have been caught by the current. In a state of exhaustion, he ended up being swept away.

His sister-in-law was bathing in the river and ended up a victim of the raging current as well.

Apart from the pair, three more people were carried off in the same incident, according to The Star.

Both confirmed dead by medical staff

Papar Fire and Rescue Station responded to the distress call at 10.10am, and an eight-person team arrived at the location 40 minutes later.

Upon their arrival, villagers had already recovered the bodies of the victims.

The man and his sister-in-law were confirmed dead at the scene by medical officers, while the other three victims were rescued.

Bodies sent to hospital for further action

The bodies were later handed over to the police for further action.

Authorities have launched an investigation, while the bodies of the deceased were sent to Papar Hospital for further action.
