Fisherman in Thailand gets praise after he rescues monkey he spotted at sea
Earlier this week, the Phuket Times Facebook page shared a clip of a fisherman rescuing a monkey swimming at sea. The clip quickly went viral, drawing close to 12,000 likes and many comments praising the man for his kindness.
According to Khaosod English, the incident occurred at around 9.30am near Ko Maphrao.
Rescuing a monkey from the water
In the clip, two fishermen were quietly fishing in their boat when they spotted a monkey floating in the distance.
They initially thought the animal was a log floating in the water, but realised it was a monkey when it started splashing in the water and they saw its tail.

They rushed to the animal and observed that it looked quite exhausted. The monkey was suspected to have swam from Koh Siray, around 5km away from the spot they found it in.
Thinking that the noise spooked the monkey, the fishermen turned off the engine and tossed a life jacket at it.
Despite their good intentions, the monkey was cautious, even hissing at the men who tried to lure the monkey onto the boat with promises of fresh water.

Getting the monkey to shore
Eventually, the monkey decided to board the boat. Not wanting to spook it, the fishermen manually rowed their boat to Ko Maphrao, where they believed the monkey intended to swim to.

Once they were close enough to shore, the monkey leapt back into the water and continued swimming. The final shot of the clip showed the monkey looking back at the men before going into the jungle.
Many commentors heaped praise on the two men who rescued the monkey.

Some netizens even joked about how the monkey did not offer a word of appreciation for the men before swimming to shore.

Others also noted how monkeys in the area, especially those in Phang Nga Bay, are very proficient at swimming and diving.
