Minister condemns Malaysian participant in transgender beauty pageant
Malaysian minister Dr Zulkifli Hasan condemned a Malaysian individual who joined a transgender beauty pageant in Bangkok in a Facebook post on 1 Sept.
This comes after a clip of the contestant went viral on social media.
The minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) said the action tarnishes the country’s image and urged the public not to support the candidate.
Individual joined Miss Equality World 2026 pageant
The individual participated in the Miss Equality World 2026 pageant held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 22 to 30 Aug.
A post on the pageant’s Facebook page revealed that the Malaysian contestant had won the prize for Best National Costume.
In the viral clip, the candidate appears to be speaking about projects aimed at supporting transgender individuals in Penang.

Notably, the Instagram post was marked as being from an “AI creator”.
Minister said participation in such events tarnishes country’s image
Dr Zulkifli’s post stated that the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) “strongly condemns” the individual’s actions. It read:
Such actions not only tarnish the country’s image on the international stage, but are also clearly contrary to Islamic teachings, local cultural norms, and the values of decency and morality held by Malaysians.
It stressed that imitating the opposite gender and promoting a transgender lifestyle is prohibited under Islamic law.
Additionally, the Malaysian government or religious authorities do not support, permit, or recognise the organisation or participation in such events.

Dr Zulkifli then urged the public to not sensationalise or glorify “matters that violate Sharia law”.
He said religious authorities and relevant agencies will work together to examine the individual’s actions based on existing laws.
