Japanese actress Kanna Hashimoto sparks reactions online for back-bending pose with Merlion
On Monday (7 Sept), Japanese actress Kanna Hashimoto shared a photo of her bending her back to “drink” from Singapore’s iconic Merlion.
The post quickly captured Japanese netizens’ attention and, as of the time of writing, it has garnered over 30 million views and over 3,600 comments.
Sharing her travel photos
In the caption, Hashimoto wrote that she was sharing these “out of the blue” as she had missed the timing to share them earlier.
The photos were taken at night, with barely anyone around the usually crowded Merlion Park.
Like most visitors to Singapore, the popular actress wanted her own photo “drinking” from the Merlion.
However, she managed to put her own spin on it.

The usually graceful actress can be seen bending backwards so that she would face skywards as she opened her mouth.
She shared two photos with this pose, one where she faces the Merlion and one where she has her back to it.

Netizens amused by the pose
The post prompted a wave of reactions online.
Another actress jokingly remarked about Hashimoto’s face, to which she replied that you could not really see the face she was making.
One commenter even noted how Hashimoto was wearing slippers meant for toilets. However, a response to that comment said that she was in fact wearing Hermes sandals worth nearly S$1,300.
One clever commenter rotated one of the images by 90 degrees and said that now Hashimoto is the Merlion, with the iconic statue now seemingly receiving a drink from her instead.
