Singaporeans clash over expenses during group trips
Group trips are meant to make memories, but for many Singaporeans, sorting out the bill afterwards puts the friendship to the test.
According to a YouTrip survey, one in three Singaporeans have experienced disputes over travel expenses after a group trip.
21% even said they would not travel with the same group again because of this.
Late repayments top cause of money disputes
Among the 1,000 respondents surveyed, late repayments, incorrect calculations, and unfair splitting of expenses were identified as the top triggers for money disputes.
The bigger the group, the messier it gets.
Those travelling in groups of six or more were 1.5 times more likely to clash over expenses than those travelling in pairs.

The survey also asked respondents to identify the role they usually take during group travels.
Those who took care of the bills upfront and managed the group’s expenses were described as “accountants”, while those who paid their share after the trip were described as “post-trip payers”.
Being the travel group’s “accountant” has its costs
The survey found that the accountants were more likely to have experienced a dispute than post-trip payers.
One in three accountants said they took on the role reluctantly, and 45% of them shared that they spend over a day settling expenses after the trip.

The biggest issue accountants face is the awkwardness of reminding friends to pay them back.
This is followed by the risk of losing their own money due to inaccurate expense tracking, and the hassle of sorting through receipts.
Because of these factors, accountants were found to be four times more likely to end a friendship over travel expenses.
Most Singaporeans overspend on group trips
Beyond the arguments, 88% of respondents admitted to exceeding their personal budgets while travelling in a group.
While 68% said this was due to “living in the moment”, others cite the challenges of having shared expenses as a factor.

These include losing track of who paid what, the difficulty of tracking expenses in real-time, and not being able to easily view the group’s spending.
The survey also asked respondents what would improve their group travel experience. Many said they wanted a simpler accounting process, automated expense tracking, and an overview of the group’s spending balance.
YouTrip launches payment-splitting feature to ease friction during group travels
To help ease these financial pain points during group travel, YouTrip has launched YouTrip Split.
With this new in-app feature, users can create a dedicated group for each trip, add friends and pull transactions directly from their YouTrip payment history to split.

You can then divide expenses equally or by exact amount, percentage or share.
Split amounts can also be settled in their original currency or Singapore dollars, with the app taking care of the currency conversion for even less hassle.
Whenever a creator splits a bill, YouTrip sends a push notification to group members with their share. They can then pay this directly within the app.

To celebrate the launch of YouTrip Split, YouTrip is covering the travel expenses of three groups.
From now till 14 Oct, users who initiate a group split with at least three people will stand a chance to have their trip expenses covered up to S$5,000.
