50 kindergarten students in China struck with nausea and vomiting
About 50 children allegedly suffered nausea and vomiting after having lunch at the school cafeteria of a kindergarten in China.
This occurred at the Affiliated Kindergarten of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology on the last day of the spring semester on 30 June.
Parents questioned the cause of the mass vomiting, but the kindergarten had not provided an official explanation even when the new school year began in September.
Kitchen staff used wok to wash mop
On 14 Sept, the kindergarten’s health teacher and canteen safety officer revealed that the canteen had serious hygiene violations.
She also revealed that a kitchen staff member had used a wok to clean a mop.

According to Yangcheng Evening News, the teacher, Ms Wang, posted about the kindergarten canteen’s violations on her WeChat Moments.
These allegedly include using the sink used for washing vegetables to wash hair, soak mosquito nets, and brush shoes.
Ms Wang said she had repeatedly raised these issues to the principal, but they were not rectified.
On Monday (21 Sept), Ms Wang also shared a photo showing kitchen staff cleaning a drain cover and washing a mop in a wok meant for cooking the children and teachers’ food.

Special task force investigates issue
Initially, official investigations identified that 20 students suffered nausea and vomiting, ETtoday reported.
However, parents compiled the cases themselves and found that about 50 children showed signs of vomiting.
As the issue drew widespread criticism, local government departments established a special task force to investigate.

They reviewed the kindergarten’s kitchen surveillance footage and launched a case to look into the alleged violations.
On 17 Sept, the joint investigation team updated parents on the latest developments of the case.
Principal, teacher and kitchen staff dismissed
A reporter also called the kindergarten to inquire about the issue on 21 Sept.
A staff member reportedly said, “We are now following all the proper procedures, and there are canteen managers supervising us daily”.
The principal, the teacher in charge of logistics and safety, and all kitchen staff involved have allegedly been dismissed and replaced.
The staff member added that they have explained the situation to parents and have informed them about the children’s medical examinations.
