Woman shares unexpectedly therapeutic 14km solo walk home at night in Singapore

A woman recently shared how she walked 14km home alone at night in Singapore, saying the four-hour journey turned out to be “way more therapeutic” than expected.

Impromptu walk home from Boat Quay

In an Instagram post on 23 Sept, @de_knees__ recounted her spontaneous decision to walk home from Boat Quay after midnight.

According to the Original Poster (OP), it was around 12.30am and the price of a Grab ride home was S$50.80.

The OP had also been wanting to try a solo night walk for some time, so the hefty fare became the “push” she needed.

With no particular plan besides wanting to experience “what Singapore felt like after midnight”, she set off on the 14km journey.

Felt safe for most of the journey

The OP said she generally felt safe during the walk which lasted from 12.30am to 4.20am.

She was surprised by how peaceful Singapore felt at night and said she was grateful to be “able to do this” here.

There were, however, moments when she felt scared, particularly when passing the Japanese cemetery.

Despite this, she felt comfortable enough to continue, while being aware that “feeling safe doesn’t mean there’s zero risk”.

She acknowledged that walking alone at night, particularly as a woman, comes with risks.

She said she stayed aware of her surroundings, trusted her instincts, and knew she could stop or book a Grab if she felt uncomfortable.

Woman shares tips for long night walk

For those considering a similar night walk, the OP advised wearing proper shoes, staying aware of one’s surroundings, and keeping phones accessible.

She also suggested playing music “moderately out loud” instead of using headphones, and sticking to well-lit routes where possible.

The OP also advised telling family members, partners, or friends about the night walk, turning on live location sharing and carrying a power bank.

Most importantly, she stressed that finishing the 14km was “never more important than getting home safely”.

Despite the lack of sleep due to the long night walk, she said the experience was worth it.

Beyond saving S$50.80, the OP described the four hours as uninterrupted time to walk, think, and experience Singapore differently.

“It was unexpectedly therapeutic,” she said. However, she added that she probably would not do this anywhere else in the world.

She also encouraged others to try something new too, while trusting their instincts and knowing their limits.
