Jamus Lim announces programme for modernising Sengkang GRC lifts, costs less than replacement
Sengkang Member of Parliament (MP) Jamus Lim took to Facebook to announce the upgraded lifts across the constituency.
These included safety improvements and refurbished interiors.
Prof Lim even got to fulfil a small dream of his: riding atop a lift in the shaft.

Jamus Lim says several Sengkang lifts totally modernised aside from outer frame
“I don’t generally post about most town council-related projects,” Associate Professor Lim wrote on 25 Sept.
He explained that routine improvements are part and parcel of the job.
However, Prof Lim felt that some projects should be brought up if they have wider ramifications across the entire town or are the solution to a problem with considerable feedback.
Since July, residents of certain Sengkang GRC blocks have enjoyed modernisation upgrades for their lifts.

Unlike the traditional lift replacement program — which overhauls the entire elevator with a brand new one — the modernisation project replaces just about everything but the outer shell.
The programme refurbished the interior and changed all other parts, including the belts and engine.

New lifts feature rescue system to bring passengers to nearest floor during failure
Lifts also received a new automatic rescue system. Prof Lim claimed that in the event of a power failure, the system would bring the lift to the nearest floor, open the doors, and let passengers exit.
“For the cost of two replacements, we get three modernisations, and the downtime reduces from up to half a year to about several months,” he explained

Prof Lim said the goal would be to progressively implement the modernisation upgrades, in lieu of replacements.
However, eligibility is dependent on the age of the HDB block and engineers deeming the existing lift frame structurally viable.
Lastly, the modernisation also allowed Prof Lim another benefit.
I got to fulfill, briefly, a small lifelong dream of riding atop an elevator in the shaft, like what you see in the movies!
